Temple Habonim

Barrington, RI

Community member comments: The rabbi at Temple Habonim in Barrington is openly gay and lives with his husband, and Temple Beth-El in Providence has very active lesbian members.

Energetic Healing + Wellness

Pawtucket, RI

I am a queer small business owner offering holistic wellness services to the community; all beings and all bodies. Walking alongside and pairing my complimentary modalities with traditional therapies. Offering another outlet and opportunity to explore other modalities individually, as a couple, family and so on.

Temple Beth-El

Providence, RI

Temple Beth-El’s PRIDE TEAM committee is guided by a vision of a world where all Jewish organizations are strengthened by LGBTQIA=-inclusive policy, programming, culture, and leadership.

First Unitarian Providence

Providence, RI

We are Unitarian Universalist and Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Humanist, Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, atheist, and agnostic, believers in God, and more. On the forefront of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer inclusion for more than 40 years, we are people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. First Unitarian welcomes you: your whole self, with all your truths and your doubts, your worries and your hopes. Join us on this extraordinary adventure of faith.

Community member comments: My wife, daughter, and I belong to First Unitarian Providence, where we have always been fully, warmly welcomed. It’s a community that is sincerely committed to full inclusion, and many of us who are sexual minorities are in leadership roles in the congregation. First U PVD (and UUs more generally) was very active in the movement for same-sex marriage, for example. We are moving towards becoming a sanctuary congregation for undocumented people, and have lots of other social justice work and outreach happening. The congregation itself does tend to be older and whiter than many of us would like, but it’s good people.

The Church of the Redeemer

Providence, RI

Some parishioners live within walking distance, others travel from other communities in Rhode Island. Throughout its history this parish has been committed to the inclusion of all people. At its founding that meant pews were free so, regardless of economic means, anyone could attend. A century later the parish was active in supporting women’s ordination and the full inclusion of LGBT people. More recently we have committed to the work of racial reconciliation.

Rivers Edge Intuitive Arts

Providence, RI

I am a professional tarot reader, herbalist, and teacher with over 15 years of experience (re)connecting people to their own innate power and wisdom.

My approach to tarot synthesizes a variety of influences including Jungian psychology, art history, mythology, somatics, traditional cartomancy, and ecology to co-create grounding and empowering reading sessions for my clients.

As a transgender person hailing from a long line of dowsers and prophetic dreamers, my practice is defined by “having one foot in each world.” I specialize in supporting people navigating transition or transformation at any scale in their lives.

Mathewson St United Methodist Church

Providence, RI

We are one of the more than 300 United Methodist congregations belonging to the Reconciling Ministries Network.  As part of the reconciling movement, we believe Christ’s love is meant for all God’s children. We thus welcome our brothers and sisters of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
Our parishioners include heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, and transgender individuals, as well as heterosexual, transgender, and same-sex couples and families. Our faces are shades of black, brown, and white. Our ages range from the very young to the very old. Some of us are people of means; others not so much. Our cultural backgrounds are diverse. But whatever our differences, we are united in believing that our hearts and actions should be guided by Jesus’ fundamental dictum to “love thy neighbor.”

Community member commentsWe were previously members of Mathewson St United Methodist Church in downtown Providence, which definitely walks the walk as far as outreach to the street community, in particular. It’s very much a “boots on the ground” social justice ministry. We were always welcomed there and there are some terrific people who are part of that community, including lots of LGBTQ folks in leadership roles, but the larger United Methodist denomination is decidedly not progressive regarding LGBTQ issues. (This is one of the reasons we left, as well as the church’s lack of a real Sunday School.) UM churches that disagree with the denomination’s stance are known as “reconciling congregations.”

Beneficent Church

Providence, RI

Beneficent Church is a community that you don’t expect to find in church. Our members include everyone from agnostics to retired clergy, queer and straight and trans, and all colors of the rainbow. And there’s a place for you, too.

The United Church of Christ (UCC) uses the term “open and affirming” to identify congregations that have made a commitment to welcoming all children of God, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

It doesn’t matter to us how you identify yourself – gay, transgender, LGBTQ, queer or otherwise. If you’re looking for a church that welcomes you exactly as God has lovingly created you, Beneficent Church is your new home.

Central Congregational

Providence, RI

Central is open to all regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, mental facility, economic circumstance, or physical condition. Our ministry exists to serve others, spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, comfort and challenge one another, and share our joys and concerns.

Community member commentsAs far as other Protestant congregations/denominations go, the United Church of Christ – which includes Beneficent Church downtown and Central Congregational on the East Side – has a number of “open and affirming” congregations that are committed to LGBTQ inclusion. Both Beneficent and Central explicitly welcome us. 🙂

The Religious Society of Bell Street Chapel

Providence, RI

Our mission is to welcome all people into our loving community; nurture each other; deepen our spirituality together and; work for peace and social justice by dismantling the culture of white supremacy. We are a religious community where free inquiry and a life-long search for truth are respected and encouraged. We are a welcoming, joyful, queer positive, multigenerational and, social justice seeking Unitarian Universalist congregation. We support ethical and intentional living, encourage wonder and awe, and believe in our interdependence and the power of love. If you are looking for a spiritual or religious home, we hope you will find one with us! We are a Welcoming Congregation — a designation of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA.org).

Amicable Congregational Church

Tiverton, RI

A significant event was the church’s mission to “Widen Our Welcome” through a capital campaign and renovation to make the building accessible to all, completed in the summer of 2017. This was a long, arduous process that required the financial and spiritual commitment of our congregation. We now have a spacious front entry that opens to the minister’s office, previously housed upstairs over the chapel area. Stairs lead down to our Sunday school rooms, conference room, supply room, Thrift Shop, and two renovated gender-neutral bathrooms. The upstairs leads to the office administrator’s space, a long hallway allowing for seating and bulletin board display, a gender-neutral bathroom, the upper hall where we share coffee hour together and provide space for community gatherings, and of course, our beautiful sanctuary. The main intent of our renovation was to make our building accessible to all, with the inclusion of an elevator.

Berean Baptist Church

Harrisville, RI

We, the fellowship of Berean Baptist Church, worship one God who is revealed and accessible to each and every one of us regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, social standing or all other abilities.  All have been given the gift of accepting full participation in the Kingdom of God because God’s grace, love, and mercy are given freely and unconditionally and extend to all people.  Therefore, we accept, welcome and affirm all as brothers and sisters united in striving to live holy and acceptable lives in the service of God’s Kingdom.
